A perfume to celebrate hanami

Each spring, the Japanese gather to admire the beauty of cherry blossoms. Guerlain celebrates this annual hanami tradition with an exceptional limited and numbered edition of Cherry Blossom in its iconic Bee Bottle. For the 2022 edition, Guerlain has asked the embroidery studio Kyoko Création founded by the Japanese artist Kyoko Sugiura to create the delicate floral adornment of its flacon.

How can the emotion born from hanami be expressed in a bottle?

This was the artistic challenge Jean-Paul Guerlain set out to meet in 2000 when he composed Cherry Blossom. The radiant bergamot blends with an exquisite green tea accord that evokes another of Japan’s ancient rituals. The new Guerlain fragrance is faceted with notes as immaculate as a sakura petal in the moonlight: tender cherry blossom, powdery lilac and jasmine. The diaphanous trail of white musks carries the delicate fragrance, like the breeze carries sakuras.

An artist influenced by France and Japan

Born in Japan, Kyoko Sugiura learned Japanese silk thread embroidery and different European embroidery techniques before coming to France in 2009 to train in Haute Couture embroidery. In 2012, the Japanese designer founded her own Parisian embroidery studio, Kyoko Création, where each of her pieces is crafted by hand and interwoven with materials and techniques from each of her two cultures. Her magic touch transcends embroidery, turning it into a fully-fledged means of expression.

For the creation of the adornment, Kyoko Sugiura worked with a community of 18 Japanese women from very diverse backgrounds – office workers, teachers, designers… Professional or amateur embroiderers she trained herself, and invited to participate in this unique project, turning it into a human as well as artistic adventure. It also expresses Guerlain’s commitment to the empowerment of women, by celebrating an art elaborated, perpetuated, and practiced by them throughout the centuries.

“Ever since ancient times, the Japanese have written poems while dreaming of blossoming cherry trees floating in the moonlight”, the artist says. At night, we see colours differently. This edition evokes cherry blossoms at night, in the moonlight, in a precious chiaroscuro of white, black, and gold. A new variation on this poetic theme.

Hand-crafted by Kyoko and her team of embroiderers, the adornments of the 2022 edition borrow from Haute Couture embroidery techniques. The materials selected by the artist, all made in Japan, will be entirely assembled by hand. This masterpiece of refinement reveals delicate leather-like flowers adorned with needle-sewn pearls.

The perfume is house in a sleek, eco-friendly refillable bottle.
