BMW to sponsor first BMW Masters – a $7 million golf tournament in China

The BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth and German’s BMW International Open are the two European Tour events sponsored by BMW. The automotive brand is adding one more title sponsor. BMW is the patron of the newly sanctioned golf tournament in China.

The first BMW Masters will be held at Shanghai’s Lake Malaren Golf Club from 25th to the 28th October this year, reports sportspro. The 2011 edition of the tournament was run as the Lake Malaren Shanghai Masters and was not sanctioned by any major professional tour.

The prize fund for the new European Tour-sanctioned event, which will be the 47th on the European Tour’s Race to Dubai, will be US$7 million making it the second most lucrative event on the European Tour.

“As the name indicates, the BMW Masters will play a particularly significant role in BMW’s commitment to the sport as a ‘Global Golf Player,’ said Ian Robertson, a board member for BMW with responsibility for marketing and sales.

“China is a key market for BMW and golf is the ideal stage, on which to present our claim of dynamics and precision. We are delighted to be able to offer our customers and spectators from throughout Asia a top-class event – both in terms of the sport on offer and the overall visitor experience.”
