Take a first look at the stunning bespoke space.
Last week marked the official opening of the House of Walpole, a two-year-long collaboration between Northacre Properties and Walpole to create a space showcasing the very best British luxury brands under one distinctly well-appointed roof. Located inside the prestigious new No.1 Palace Street, The St Regis Residences development in London’s Westminster, the apartment has been designed by interior design studio and Walpole member, Oliver Burns.
Steeped in history, No.1 Palace Street, The St. Regis Residences, is adjacent to His Majesty’s official London residence, Buckingham Palace, and boasts unique views of the Palace and its private gardens.
Taking inspiration from the gardens, Oliver Burns has created a unique design concept for House of Walpole entitled ‘A Celebration of the Palace Gardens’, celebrating the landscaping and stories behind the residence’s secretive green spaces. The gardens have been brought to life in this residence with incredible attention to detail, including four Rachel Vosper bespoke scents which emulate each season.
Helen Amy Murray, Aiveen Daly, Cole & Son, Savoir Beds and Maddox Gallery are among the hero brands that have contributed to the House of Walpole. Asprey, Bentley Motors, Axminster Carpets and luxury e-commerce destination Bazaar, also feature within the 4,000 sq ft duplex 3-bedroom residence. Artwork throughout, featuring pieces by Banksy, Jeff Koons and David Shrigley, has been curated by Maddox Gallery.
“The history and architecture of No 1 Palace Street, The St. Regis Residences contribute to the luxurious sense of place with many of the historical and listed features, such as the fireplaces and original cornicing, having been lovingly restored,” says Amy Wardell, Head of Brand at Northacre Properties. “The striking 3.6m floor-to-ceiling heights result in an elegant entertainment space with the vista of Buckingham Palace gardens as a dramatic backdrop. Luxury architectural interior design studio, Oliver Burns, has paid homage to the striking architectural features throughout whilst masterfully bringing the outside in through the story of the Palace Gardens to create a unique turnkey home. It has been wonderful to see each piece of the design come to life and witness the incredible dexterity and talent of so many skilful British makers.”
“Our concept for House of Walpole seeks to celebrate the enduring love affair between the very best of British luxury and the English garden,” says Sharon Lillywhite, Founder of Oliver Burns, who masterminded the design of the residence. “Steeped in history and intrigue, the palace gardens provide the most unique backdrop for House of Walpole and have long been a focus for national and royal celebrations. Our design vision is to re-tell the stories from this treasured sanctuary in a modern way, a love letter to the garden’s enduring beauty, transformation and resilience.
“The aesthetic for our concept is ‘Majestic Modern’ – a contemporary response that honours the heritage of this enchanting garden in all its splendour, giving the internal space as much gravitas as the external architecture. The design looks to nature’s palette to inform the colour scheme. Alongside neutral base notes, muted tones of grey and blue that reflect the ever-changing surface of the lake and sky meld with warmer earthy tones and soft shades of green, reflecting the seasons and inviting nature indoors. The palace gardens provide an endless source of inspiration, with flora and fauna abound. From floral and winged motifs to organic lines, the narrative is weaved through the design using the subtle geometry, abstract pattern and repetition found in nature. Our multi-sensory approach blends traditional details with cutting-edge design, with a contemporary take on traditional materials such as antiqued glass, metal and stone.
“We have taken a thoughtful, approach to the brief that mixes both timeless British institutions and the new guard in a thoroughly modern way. This design goes beyond the aesthetic to reflect ‘Thoughtful Luxury’ in practice, all underpinned by The Northacre Properties Way.”
“Capitalising on the desirability of UK luxury goods to both international and domestic customers, it is a beautifully curated, immersive, and celebratory presentation of the skill and wealth of design talent this country has to offer,” says Helen Brocklebank, Chief Executive Officer of Walpole. “With its proximity to Buckingham Palace, House of Walpole at No. 1 Palace Street takes the very best of British luxury craftmanship, including brand collaborations and bespoke pieces to evoke a harmonious yet unique sense of place that will appeal to any future owner.
“As the sector body for British luxury, we were delighted to be able to convene the brands shown in the apartment and it’s been a pleasure to partner with Walpole members, Northacre Properties and Oliver Burns to bring this captivating project to fruition.”
