The Maillon de Cartier ladies watch is firstly a gold jewel, but one designed by the Cartier watchmaking studios.
The Maillon de Cartier watch is the perfect centrepiece of a poised wardrobe that plays on the classic codes of the chain-link bracelet whilst reinventing today’s attitudes.
According to Marie-Laure Cérède, Cartier Director of Design for Watchmaking, the luxury Maison wanted to deconstruct the bracelet and transcend its design through a volume approach. A precious collection, the Maillon de Cartier watch unites exceptional jewellery pieces with stones that enhance the design. The dials are inlaid to echo the sequencing of the stones set on the links. The choice of shaded stones in the blue lacquer and tsavorites version adds to the kinetic relief of the watch. All the watch models are equipped with quartz movements.
The new Cartier timepiece was launched digitally during Watches & Wonders Geneva 2020 together with Pasha de Cartier, Santos XL, and Tank Asymétrique novelties.
Emotion is in the movement and tension.
Rectangular links, a hexagonal dial, bevelled brancards: the design of the Maillon de Cartier watch invites Cartier’s geometry into its rhythm. As monochrome-watches.com reports, “Cartier’s Maillon design, composed of chunky rounded rectangular links, has been used across the board in jewellery (wedding rings, bracelets and necklaces) and now makes its way into this new collection of watches.”
“From the hexagonal bezel to the sculptural link bracelet, everything has been twisted into a new shape. It’s almost as though the gold links of the bracelet and even the geometry of the case were wrung out like a piece of wet cloth and left to consolidate into this amazing fluid geometry.”
According to hodinkee, “the Maillon de Cartier is, for lack of a better word, a bracelet watch. It has a relatively small dial with the case measuring 16mm x 17mm and a twisted linked bracelet that is the same thickness as the case.”
“While Cartier has no shortage of jewelry watches, the Maillon de Cartier is a fresh addition to the maison. It is a perfect example of what Cartier does best – edgy sophistication without too much drama. The word “maillon” means link in French, and that is the highlight of this watch. It doesn’t matter that it might be impossible to tell the time on this watch, because the way the bracelet is articulated and constructed is a true delight,” added hodinkee.
Well-rounded, the chain-links move in time with the ultra-feminine elegance of the Maillon de Cartier watch. It all lies in the twist of the lines, this torsion given to the perspective with which the watch’s dial blends. This perspective allows the case and links to entwine themselves in one graphic motion.
Maillon de Cartier’s volume is “tangible, angular and delicately confrontational.”
