Each spring, Guerlain perfumers manage to unleash Lily of the Valley’s secrets and recreate the scent.
For over 110 years, the House of Guerlain has been perpetuating the tradition of Muguet, a luxurious occasion that celebrates the arrival of Spring. Each year, a limited and numbered edition pays tribute to the lily-of-the-valley’s little good-luck charm bell.
While its bottle is reimagined each spring, Guerlain Muguet’s unique composition has bloomed since its creation in 1908 by Jacques Guerlain, one of the most prolific and influential perfumers of the 20th century, the third and most famous of the Guerlain family. Jacques Guerlain’s Muguet perfume was an abstract floral perfume with powdery and creamy facets.
The fresh and floral fragrance blossoms with a beautifully enhanced lily of the valley note with nuances of bergamot, jasmine and rose that herald the warm weather to come.
Reimagined in 2016 by Master Perfumer Thierry Wasser, the Muguet scent captures zesty bergamot top notes, followed by lush green vegetal notes. The fragrance’s heart boasts a distinctly floral lily of the valley character accented with hints of rose and jasmine. The 2020 Millésime celebrates the rebirth of nature by decorating the Bee Bottle with flowers: a floral and poetic adornment designed by the Maison Massillon—French jewellers specialising in porcelain and 24-carat gold-plated wire.
Cascading over the dome of the Bee Bottle, Maison Massillon’s creation for Muguet 2020 gives the fragrance all the poetic, refined beauty of a decorative ornament. The French designer of porcelain jewellery is gracing the iconic Bee Bottle with delicate flowers. Alizée and Chloé, the founding sisters and designers, handcraft exceptional, unique and timeless pieces using pure white biscuit porcelain and 24k gold-plated wire.
Opening their petals to welcome exquisite bees, luminous sprigs of immaculate, blossoming flowers are gilded with slivers of gold leaf, bringing the final touch to this masterpiece of meticulous and refine craftsmanship.
“When Guerlain asked me to design the Muguet 2020 creation, I observed the shape of the bottle, the patterns, namely the bee… I then thought of a piece of jewellery, an ornament to dress the neck of the bottle,” shared Alizée Méhats, founder of Maison Massillon.
As a final touch, Guerlain’s Dames de Table wind a slim gold cord around the bottle’s neck – a traditional technique known as ‘baudruchage’. Hidden among the delicate stems, you’ll find a small buzzing bee, accentuated with hints of gold leaf: a subtle tribute to Guerlain’s heritage.
To take the fragrance with you in all circumstances, the bottle comes with a perfumed drop, draped in a white leather sheath. Guerlain Muguet 2020 Millesime by Maison Massilon is a good-luck limited and numbered edition (4 427 pieces available worldwide).
