In signature maximalist style, the elegant arc of lilies brings an iconic expression of peace and romance to handcrafted sleep.
International fashion icon and British textile designer, Dame Zandra Rhodes, delves into her print and design archives to reimagine an original and recognisable print exclusively for Savoir Beds, makers of the world’s most extraordinary beds. From the catwalk to the home, the new Lilies bed is inspired by Rhodes’s original ‘Field of Lilies’ motif designed in 1971 and adored by some of the biggest names in fashion.
The new Savoir x Zandra Rhodes Lilies design combines one of the most important elements of the home, the bed, with Zandra’s love of art to create a functional work of art.
After working together at the Walpole British Luxury Awards at the end of 2019, Zandra fell in love with Savoir and its approach to crafting the world’s most luxurious beds. It was following this project and the creative synergy between the two iconic British brands that the collaboration began. Creating an ultimate night’s sleep has been at the heart of Savoir, which is slightly different to Zandra’s unconventional approach to sleep, having slept no more than five hours a night. However, like many of us, Zandra developed a newfound adoration for her home and sleep
during lockdown. It was this renewed admiration that guided the design process, bringing an icon’s artwork to one
of the most important pieces of furniture in the home.
During lockdown, Zandra delved into her archives to create an exclusive artwork for Savoir based on one of her
most significant and identifiable motifs, ‘Field of Lilies’. A gift of lilies from Japanese fashion designer, Issey
Miyake, inspired Zandra to draw the delicate flowers for her own collections. Taken from original drawings sketched
in 1971, the artwork featured on LILIES conveys a meaningful part of Zandra’s life. The reimagined artwork reflects
Zandra’s expression of a Savoir bed; peaceful and romantic.
The original ‘Field of Lilies’ design has been worn by some of the world’s biggest fashion and cultural icons from
Twiggy on the front cover of Vogue to Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie in Sex and The City. The iconic motif has
been reworked specifically for a Savoir bed with an elegant arc of lilies focal point. With her home full of colour, the collaboration features an array of historical Zandra colourways. Recognised for her extensive colour palette, Zandra and her design team wanted to create tonal harmony. Carefully adapting each colour, to develop deep hues that convey a sense of calm. During this process, Zandra also developed a new colour palette for Savoir, featuring much softer and soothing tones for tranquillity. The Lilies artwork is digitally printed and is available in a selection of fabrics including velvet, a textured linen viscose and cotton.
The luxurious heritage of Savoir pairs harmoniously with Zandra Rhodes’ glamorous and eclectic aesthetic. Having
studied textile design for furnishings at the RCA, Zandra is returning to her roots.
“I love how colour and print have the potency to change your mood and how you feel, I wondered how this would relate to your body and mind at night, the peace and mood it brings – the calm and ambience”. Zandra continues, “I am starting to appreciate sleep more and more. Especially for its health benefits and healing properties. I think your bed is one of the most special things one could have in life. We spend a third of our lives in bed, it is the best investment one can make. The amazing thing about the Savoir bed is that for the first time in my life the peace it exudes makes me want to experience breakfast in bed! A luxury I don’t allow myself! I think it may change my life”. – Zandra Rhodes.
“At Savoir we believe that a bed should be designed to look as beautiful and unique as it feels. We’ve spent over a century mastering the fine art of a good night’s sleep and we are thrilled to bring Zandra’s love of art to Savoir. Your bed should be something that you invest in and appreciate, like fine art. Creating a good bed which provides the ultimate in comfort and style to exacting specification is an art-form. From the way that it’s handcrafted using the finest natural materials, the level of skill and time, to the headboard design or the artwork that adorns it, every part is made bespoke for its owner.” – Savoir Managing Director, Alistair Hughes.
Zandra’s bold design surrounds Savoir’s most famous bed set, the Nº2. An iconic design, the Nº2 was first created
for The Savoy Hotel in 1905 where it has been slept on by luminaries including Winston Churchill, Giacomo Puccini
and Marilyn Monroe. Taking over 80 hours to make, the result is sublime comfort every single night.
Skilfully created in the Savoir London Bedworks, the exclusive design celebrates the art of bespoke craft.
Every Savoir bed is carefully handcrafted using the finest natural materials and through the bespoke nature of a
Savoir bed Zandra’s artwork can be upholstered on to any bed design. From the Amelia to the Claudia, the artwork
will be adapted for every design, to ensure the exact positioning of the arc of lilies. Savoir work closely with Zandra and her team of designers on every client commission, to ensure every bed preserves the essence of the international fashion icon.
