Over 100 years ago, L’Oréal’s founder, Eugène Schueller, invented the world’s first safe, synthetic haircolor formulation—and with it, an industry that, by 2023, is estimated to be worth $1.6 billion. Now, more than a century later, we are reinventing the haircolor experience through technology.
Colorsonic and Coloright Are Reinventing Haircolor With Beauty Tech.
Timed to CES 2022, L’Oréal unveiled its latest beauty tech innovation: Colorsonic, a lightweight, handheld device that uses an innovative, mess-free process to mix haircolor and apply it evenly, delivering consistent haircolor results for consumers at home. Co-designed by the L’Oréal Technology Incubator and hundreds of consumers during product testing, this innovation is part of L’Oréal’s beauty tech ambition to solve age-old consumer challenges with cutting-edge consumer technology.
“L’Oréal began with haircolor over a century ago and today we are evolving this core piece of our business with advanced technology. The future of beauty is more personalized, more accessible and more sustainable, and we are committed to delivering this vision of the future through technologically innovative projects like Colorsonic and Coloright,” said Nicolas Hieronimus, CEO, L’Oréal Groupe.
Colorsonic, which will launch in late 2022, uses a custom mixer mechanism to combine a precise amount of developer and formula to create a haircolor. The device then dispenses the right dose of haircolor and applies it to the hair via an oscillating nozzle of bristles as they move in a zigzag pattern to evenly distribute it on the hair.
“We are reinventing the experience of our core business, haircolor.” – Guive Balooch, Head of the L’Oréal Technology Incubator.
Colorsonic incorporates L’Oréal’s commitment to delivering exceptional personalized beauty experiences. The reusable device features: Post-consumer recycled plastic, reusable gloves to accompany haircolor application, and reduced shipping packaging.
Also at CES 2022: Professional Haircolor Innovation for the Salon
In addition to reinventing the at-home haircoloring experience with Colorsonic, L’Oréal is also focused on the next evolution of the salon haircolor experience. At CES 2022, L’Oréal also introduced Coloright, an AI-connected haircolor system for salon stylists that creates on-demand, customized hair color. It puts innovation in the hands of professional colorists and customizes salon hair-color experience powered by a patented algorithm to offer more precise colorations.
The machine features a reader, which analyzes the client’s hair, measuring factors that influence color’s effectiveness, including haircolor, gray percentage, length, and density and a dispenser that contains dry beads consisting of hair dye, accompanied by cartridges of base creams, developers and diluters. Together, these dispensed components create a personalized haircolor recipe. The ultra-precise machine dispenses all the component of the formula and in total, Coloright can provide more than 1,500 custom possibilities.
