A Leap Forward In Electric Vehicle Innovation.
Lucid Group, setting new standards for luxury electric experience with the Lucid Air, winner of the 2023 World Luxury Car Award, announced the introduction of RangeXchange: an innovative new vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) adapter, available for purchase first for U.S. customers, that will enable Lucid Air owners to directly charge other electric vehicles. This new capability is enabled by Lucid’s bi-directional charging technology and proprietary software, all of which is already built into every Lucid Air.
Lucid Group, the trailblazing force in the luxury electric vehicle segment, continues to redefine the electric driving experience with the Lucid Air, hailed as the winner of the prestigious 2023 World Luxury Car Award. Now, Lucid is once again making headlines with the introduction of RangeXchange, a groundbreaking vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) adapter that promises to elevate the charging landscape for electric vehicles (EVs).
Empowering Lucid Air Owners with V2V Charging Capability:
RangeXchange represents a leap forward in electric vehicle innovation, allowing Lucid Air owners in the United States to directly charge other electric vehicles. This cutting-edge capability is made possible by Lucid’s advanced bi-directional charging technology and proprietary software, seamlessly integrated into every Lucid Air.
Peter Rawlinson, CEO and CTO of Lucid, expressed his enthusiasm for this innovation, stating, “I’m delighted that Lucid continues to innovate, enabled by our integrated fusion of software and hardware. RangeXchange is a small step to further enhance the everyday usability of the electric vehicle.”
The Technology Behind RangeXchange:
RangeXchange marks Lucid’s first application of the Wunderbox’s bi-directional charging technology, showcasing the brand’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the EV landscape. Lucid Air’s battery pack can now share its energy, providing a charging rate of up to 9.6 kW to another EV. The added range depends on the energy efficiency of the recipient vehicle and environmental factors. For most EVs currently available in the U.S. market, a charge rate of 9.6 kW translates to an additional 24 to 40 miles per hour.
Eric Bach, Senior Vice President of Product and Chief Engineer at Lucid, emphasized the broader potential of the Wunderbox technology, saying, “Designed and engineered in-house by Lucid, the Wunderbox is far more than just a piece of hardware that charges the battery pack. From giving other EVs a boost with RangeXchange today, to possible future applications like vehicle-to-home backup power, time-of-use (TOU) optimization, and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) power, Lucid’s proprietary bi-directional charging technology has the potential to greatly improve our customers’ lives.”
Over-the-Air Updates: Lucid’s Distinct Advantage:
Lucid’s commitment to innovation is further highlighted by RangeXchange’s capability for over-the-air software updates. Mike Bell, Senior Vice President of Digital at Lucid, remarked, “RangeXchange is yet another example of the tremendous value we can provide with an over-the-air software update long after a customer purchases our car. This system’s approach to the integration of hardware and software is what allows us to provide these value-add updates and is what sets Lucid apart in the auto industry.”
