Takashi Murakami flower smiles on limited edition Hublot watch. This new piece, still based on the smiling flower, the iconic theme of Murakami’s work, has moved from black to colour with transparent effects.
Swiss watchmaker Hublot and artist Takashi Murakami continue their collaboration with a second unique timepiece, the Classic Fusion Takashi Murakami Sapphire Rainbow watch. For this limited edition of 100 numbered pieces, the Japanese artist’s smiling flower beams in a whirlwind of color. This new watch is transposition of the Kawaii world into haute horology,
The new watch model from Takashi Murakami x Hublot has a 45 mm diameter case cut from sapphire crystal, a technological feat pioneered by Hublot’s luxury watchmaking manufacture. The transparent background reveals both the artist’s work and the intricate mechanics crafted by the watchmakers in Nyon.
The flower presents a mischievous smile on a three-dimensional face that emerges from the watch dial as 12 colorful petals rotate around the face. The polychromatic effect is created by setting 487 stones representing the colors of the rainbow: rubies, pink sapphires, amethysts, blue sapphires, tsavorites, yellow and orange sapphires.
“This partnership with Hublot has enabled me to express my creativity in what is a totally new medium for me. The mastery of the watchmaker’s technicians has opened up new fields of possibilities for my inspiration. The result is this new watch in the colours of the rainbow.” – Takashi Murakami.
The petals turn under the watch crystal to bring Takashi Murakami’s flower to life thanks to an ingenious ball-bearing system specially developed by Hublot’s engineers.
Thanks to an ingenious ball-bearing system specially developed by Hublot’s engineers, the petals start turning under the watch crystal and bring Takashi Murakami’s smiling flower to life. In the beating heart of the art-inspired timepiece, the Nyon watchmakers have placed the company’s HUB1214 calibre, here without the stopwatch function. This movement has a power reserve of 72 hours.
“Our continuing collaboration with Takashi Murakami is taking us to new lands of expression as yet unexplored by the watchmaking world. In this work, artistic creation and our company’s know-how intertwine to give birth to a work of art you can wear on your wrist!” – Ricardo Guadalupe, HUBLOT CEO.
According to Hublot, the new watch is targeting Contemporary Art insiders. The Classic Fusion Takashi Murakami Sapphire Rainbow watch is available in a limited edition of 100 numbered pieces.
